Yup, was one of the best and worst games I've ever watched... and I've sat through 4 Richmond Draws!
First Q was pretty lackluster to say the least, with both teams wasting the ball. Second Q for the Tigers was terrible, Power did extremely well to be 53 points up. Start of the 3rd Q when the Tigers were down by 59pts, quite a few people actually left the ground, but something snapped and the Tigers went on a rampage right through till about the 20mins mark of the 4th Q when they were trailing by just 3 points. Would have been the 4th best come back of all time if they had of pulled it off, but the goal that was scored was disallowed due to a soft and weak free kick for "Holding" and the Power went on to score a further 4 goals and basically knocked the stuffing out of the tigs. I can hardly talk at the moment, was yelling so much!
My son who turns 3 in a couple of weeks actually fell asleep under his seat late in the 3rd Q, and didn't wake up till the end... I have no idea how he stayed asleep, it was an amazing noise that was raised each and every goal the Tigers pegged back.
It was truly an amazing game to be at, and as much as everyone wanted the Tigers to get over the line, it was all celebrations at the end for a wonderful effort, and of course for Cousins last game. He was quite, and turned the ball over a few times, but he tried his guts out and I now think he's done the right thing by giving it away at this point in time.... what a legend of the game.
The Tigers also had some stand out efforts. One of my Fav players Jake King played his heart out, and I hope Richmond now keep him on the list. His work in the FWD half was great and while he can turn the ball over from time to time, he also does a whole heap of work off the ball which then allows him to get into space. Turning into a small FWD this year has done wonders for him. Jayden Post also did well, and is surely a player of the future. Contests the ball well and has the body to crash packs and fly for the odd mark. Even though he didn't take a hanger, he's really learned a few things from the Richo man over his stay at the club and may develop into a Matty Richardson type player after all. I also think some of the younger kids are ready to step up too, as the desperation shown today after half time was something to behold, especially the midfielders. They also mixed up the play which didn't always come off, but it did have Port absolutely confused, which will come in handy next year for sure... Short hand balling game came unstuck often, but their skills are not like a Geelong just yet and they tried it time after time and you could see it working once everyone is up to scratch... and then there was the opposite long and direct kicking game which tore a new one for the Port Power. Gee they were lucky that free kick was given instead of the goal... Tigers would have wont he game by 20 odd if they got their noses in front, such was the dominance they showed.
By the way, next year, don't write off Port Power too quickly, they can really turn a game around and showed very wise and encouraging plays towards the end when they pressure was on, and even earlier in the game where they took the Tigers apart, they will most definitely pick up some unlikely wins next year f they can play like that again.
Wow... I just can't get over how good that game turned out int he end. Not disappointed in the Tigers one little bit, as they did try their hearts out for the whole game. Two more years and this side could make some waves int he finals for sure, if their progression continues.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, need a few bourbons now....
